I am Lexi Bohannon, a freshman at Florida State studying finance and mathematics. I have chosen to analyze the economic implications of legalizing marijuana in the 21st century. I have located 10 curations, all accessible to the left of this P1 page.
I am drawn to this theme because the economy is constantly changing with the times. Every moment a new industry is being built and others are destroyed. At this point in time, a huge industry is in its beginning stages: recreational and medical marijuana. We are reaching the end of marijuana prohibition and people are capitalizing on this potentially very profitable product. Currently, this legalization is different from state to state, but is spreading rapidly nationwide as well as globally. This industry currently has harsh rules and regulations and requires a hefty financial background in order to get your foot in, making it less accessible to those that are financially disadvantaged. The current tax codes are designed to tax as much as the government can, while still allowing the businesses to operate. Despite the limited access, everyone should be interested as this budding industry could create thousands of jobs from agriculture to specialty bars. These added jobs could easily act as a boost to the overall economy with increased consumerism and more taxes taken in by the government.
This directly connects with my area of study, finance. As new industries grow, and others fade, I have to be able to keep up with them and anticipate the financial implications. This new industry of legal marijuana has massive potential to generate incredible amounts of new money in the United States economy, and generate more tax dollars to later better the quality of life.
This topic mainly generates news articles, financial studies (although they are very new as legalization is less than ten years old), and documentaries. While it is difficult to find compositions outside of these three, I was able to find various tax codes, infographics, and quotes from politicians and economists.
This theme is perfect for this project as it is interesting, relevant to our current economy, and is a future booming industry. At some point, all of our lives will be touched by this industry, from an increased economy to consumerism, and we should take the time to learn as much as possible and fully educate ourselves on the future of our economy.
