The Wolf Of Wall Street

My name is Lexi Bohannon, a freshman at Florida State. I have selected to analyze The Wolf Of Wall Street, a 2013 film directed by Martin Scorsese. I am analyzing this film’s economical aspects, specifically the finances behind the main characters life and the legality.

I am drawn to this narrative because I am a finance major aiming to be a financial analyst or executive. The film shows the most extreme and corrupt financial firm in the United States in the early 2000’s. This movie highlights the nasty side of the finance world and I am intrigued by the craziness that this film depicts, but also that is it a true story. The film is easily accessible, either with streaming services like Netflix or through DVD.

I study finance and mathematics, so this film about the financial world of New York directly relates to my major. I am interested in one day being involved with a large firm like the one described in the film, but most likely on a smaller scale.

I chose to question the economics of this narrative. I want to discover if the shocking wealth in this film is true and potentially obtainable, and how this representation relates to the real profession of stocks and brokerage. According to many top wall street executives, it is in their best interest to distance themselves from the wild crowd as seen in The Wolf of Wall Street. In my tertiary research, I learned about fiduciary duty, the requirement that brokers must put the interests of their clients in front of theirs. In The Wolf Of Wall Street, there was absolutely no representation of this duty. Many other people and reports are curious about the exaggerations displayed in this film and if there is a significant amount of truth behind it.

This paper is worth the time to read because it clearly analyzes how the Wolf of Wall Street incorrectly depicts the industry that I will one day be a part of. Wall Street is made up to be a sex-crazed, drug driven, and sexist industry in this film, and through research and analysis, I will show that this is a distorted and exaggerated version of the truth.
