Twitter Artists

For this week’s twitter assignment, I chose many of my favorite music artists and a few poets that I enjoy. My favorite artist, SZA has a unique twitter account. She seems to prefer to personally connect with and tweet at fans rather than promote her music and image. While she does include a small amount of her music content and where she will be performing, she mainly uses twitter as a platform to relate to fans. This style of public relations adds to her authenticity and raw style of music. I appreciate that her twitter is not filled with ads and promotions about her music and shows like other artists. I want to connect with the artist that creates music that shapes me, not marketed at. Similarly, I retweeted another artist that I love, Big Thief. The majority of tweets included videos and updates on where she will be performing. She mixed these updates, not marketing ploys, with personal tweets about her views and comments to fans. This also added to the authenticity of her music and image as she makes a point to connect with fans over promote herself. That in itself subtly promotes her. Again, I desire a humble artist that does not try to sell me on their work, their work should sell itself. Both of these artist uses pathos heavily to relate and connect with their fan following and share their personal views.
In contrast, I tweeted at another artist that I enjoy Kendrick Lamar. While his twitter is authentic in many ways, he uses this platform to promote his shows and concerts more than other artists that I tweeted. He uses this media outlet to push people to buy tickets and merchandise in order to promote his image and fame. He makes an effort to relate to fans, but with such a lar following he clearly sticks to promotions as the primary use of Twitter. With this style of Twitter use, Lamar uses ethos to establish credibility and fame in order to sell tickets
